The Assisted Reproductive Technology For Surrogacy

Assisted reproductive technology, also referred to as ART, is the process through which an infertile couple can be able to have children with the help of a surrogate. ART is also used today to help couples to have children of their own. In simple terms, ART can be defined as the process where the sperms, eggs, and even embryos are manipulated outside the body to make it easy for pregnancy to occur.

The Assisted Reproductive Technology for Surrogacy

1.  In Vitro Fertilization

This is the most common assisted reproductive technology that many people know of today and it is also known as IVF. This is the process where an egg and a

sperm are fused in laboratory conditions and an embryo is formed. This embryo is then transferred to the womb of the surrogate and pregnancy begins. Many people find it difficult to distinguish between IVF and ART, as IVF has become synonymous with ART. IVF is mainly done by parents that do not want to carry the pregnancy on their own. They, therefore, donate their egg and sperm for fusion.

IVF can either be gestational IVF or Donor egg IVF. Gestational IVF is what many people today refer to as surrogacy. This is because the egg and sperm are harvested from the intended parents. After the fusion is done in the laboratory, the resulting embryo is then transferred to the womb of the surrogate for development.

The donor IVF, on the other hand, is when a mother-to-be has poor quality eggs that are not viable for pregnancy. In this case, the sperm from her partner is fused with a viable egg from a donor and the embryo is transferred to her womb.

2.  Gamete intra-fallopian transfer

Also known as GIFT, this is quite similar to the IVF only that the fusion of the male and female gametes is done in the body of the woman. This procedure was done just like the IVF, where the egg and sperm from the parents are harvested. However, the fusion was done in the fallopian tube rather than the laboratory. This technology was very common before the success rate of IVF increased and now many people prefer IVF.

Surrogacy today is a very popular phenomenon and many people have fully embraced it. Surrogacy is a complex procedure that involves the use of very advanced technologies to ensure that it is a success. A few decades ago, surrogacy was rare because the success rate of the then technologies was quite low and inefficient. However, surrogacy is very common today due to the development of these technologies so that they are very effective and have a high success rate.
